They can file charges against you but it would cost them more in the long run. No decent lawyer would even take such a case with no evidence or proof of anything. Verbal agreements can be binding, however where such details are sketchy, it is your word against theirs. Don't worry about it.

It sounds like these people are just trying to scare you into giving them some money because they need it as much as you do. If your names are not on anything, they don't have a leg to stand on. Chalk it up to a learning experience and walk away.

Most states have laws governing verbal leases. You may be responsible for paying rent for up to 3 months if you failed to give proper notice. If you were living there then it would be logical for a judge to assume you agreed to pay for part of the utilities. While written documentation is helpful it's not needed to win a case.

In the USA anyone can sue anyone for anything....Freedom

I would immediately file a counter claim against them, for the amount of money you paid for them
for rent, for utilities, for food, and the money *half * of it that it cost you to get out of there when you did, plus maybe an extra 200 bucks for loss wages from your jobs or something.

Then I'd sit down with the bf and start a journal remember the dates the best you can
from the date all of you decided to move in together,
the conversation and the expectations
events that occured as to why you paid all of the rent, and utilites and what was the agreement on it
loan? payback? free rent?
what were the events that made you both need to get out of there.

and then go to a local notary and have the paper notarized, stating it is true.

This is what I would do.

Typically if there is not a written contract there is no way they can win. they can still sue but any decent lawyer will rip them apart.

That would be PVA; polyvinyl acetate, or maybe methylcellulose or some other paste. I find the lack of tapes, mull, and lining very disconcerting...it means that only the endsheets? are holding the bookblock to the case; you can be sure it's not a very strong book. There's also no rounding or backing, but i guess flat spines are popular nowadays.

The stitching method is called "kettlestitch," basically you pass the thread between the previous two signatures before entering the next signature...
